hey,i have issues too.well i called technical support.they said that there is very high traffic on their website right now.they are working on the problem.they told me to try early morning or late at night.they also said to try maybe after january the 3rd since kids will be back in school.also if you have windows vista like i do,it wont work on it at all.i have to go to someone else's house to try to get mine to work,bummer.but i would suggest trying to wait.they told me also that once you are able to register,you wont have any problems after that.it is just everyone trying to register at one time.hope i helped!

What software can I create?

I'm a First year student doing Bachelors degree in information technology. Can anyone tell me what software can I create using C++/Microsoft visual studio. Please help me by suggesting any idea on which I can create a software which is useful enough on a daily basis.

You can create absolutely anything.





I once wrote a program that would time and log the results of marathons. I was into it at the time and it was useful to a local run.





Another time I wrote a character recognition program, kinda useful but I was more interested in how it worked.





Basically you need to ask yourself what are you interested in? What do you need?
Reply:C++ is mostly suitable for low level programming like reading/writing to files on your hard disk and analyzing them.





It also is a good object oriented programming language.





For the rest it all up to you. I personally did a project for analyzing the log files generated by web servers to see what are the usage statistics or trends.

I am using Microsoft Visual C++ Express edition 2005 for writing a program. I needed an xml parsing library and i chose to use the Xerces libraries. The problem is that the header files are located in my D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\include\xercesc directory. the search path for the include files includes the path till D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\include so the compiler doesnt search within the xercesc directory and i am getting file not found error when i use #include%26lt;xercesc\utils\Platformutils.hpp... How to make the compiler search within the subdirectories of the included paths???

Where is the iostream file located?

I just installed Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 on my computer for a C++ class. One of the assignments is to open up the physical IOSTREAM file and see what's actually inside. I searched for the terms iostream, iostream.h, %26lt;iostream%26gt;, and #include %26lt;iostream%26gt; on my computer, but i got back nothing. Also, I personally searched in the program file called Microsoft Visual Studio, nothing there either. Can someone please give me the adress (as in C:\Program Files.....) for the iostream library? or maybe an idea as to where to look?

Reply:I'll make two points worth noting. The first is, when looking for any of the standard library files (like iostream), look for it in the compiler's default include directory. You should see a folder somewhere in the Visual C++ folder for Include, so that's where it is. Because this is Visual C++ 6 (old), it's iostream.h, not iostream. I really recommend getting a modern compiler like MinGW or Visual C++ 2005.





Also, there is a second note worth mentioning. You aren't going to see source code in the iostream file. It has already been compiled and gets linked in when building your code. You will only see the headers, which contains some constant definitions, typedefs, and inlined code.

If you want to host the application on the same machine, it should be http://localhost/%26lt;Virtual Directory%26gt;. You can also use %26lt;Virtualhttp://127.0.0.1/%26lt;Virtual Directory%26gt;





If you want to host on a machine within your local area network, you can use the name of the machine or the ip address of the machine. Type ipconfig from commadline to get the ip address of any machine.





%26lt;Virtual Directory%26gt; is the folder you creat for your application.





If you want to host it somewhere else, you need to FTP the files to the server then you can use the website's name.

I really want to get into programming!?

I'm taking a programming class at my high school, and I'm pretty sure I found my future career. First semester, we learned QuickBasic, and in the second semester, we are learning Visual Basic. I really want to study some other languages like C#, C++, or Java, but I have a few questions:





1) Which language would be the best to learn on my own first?





2) There have to be other methods other than Microsoft Visual Studio for making programs. Are these called compilers? If not, what are they called? Which ones would you recommend that I use?





3) If I were to buy a book on Visual C# or Visual C++, would the free Express Editions still be able to carry out the tasks that the books will teach you?

I really want to get into programming!?
The very EASIEST language to learn first is VB in the .NET framework.





You can actually down load a free copy of Visual Studio Express from Microsoft's website. And yes, they are complete. You can write any program in the Express editions that you could write in the more expensive purchased versions of Visual Studio.





The best books that I, personally, would recommend, are the series entitled "Teach Yourself --- in 21 Days" and "Teach Yourself --- in 24 Hours" - with 21 or 24 lessons (chapters) respectively. (You replace the "---" with the name of the programming language you want to learn.) These books are put out by SAMS, and any Barnes %26amp; Nobles will carry them.

Reply:Learn C/C++ Most languages are built off of what this language did. Then you can either move on to C# or Java.





There are other compliers but Microsoft is probably the biggest driving force behind teaching langagues and so thats why you use that product.


Java is done differently then through Microsoft because its more open source.


Borderland did have some C/C++ compliers but they just didn't compare to Microsoft.





Probably most things the any book would have on C++ or C# would work with the free edition. you might miss something things, but that would be more on Visual Studio then it is in learning C#.


How can I setup a dual boot configuration with Vista and XP?

Im sure youre aware of this-- but windows vista sucks. I like the interface of it, but thats all it has. I want to still keep it since its slowly getting better (especially since microsoft final released a vista compatible version of the XNA studio for visual c#), but I want to get XP back so I can still use it when vista is doing something stupid. I tried to install XP after my vista upgrade and it wouldnt let me because vista is the newer version. I know that its possible to dual boot xp and vista because people are doing it... but I think they may have been using xp and added vista and not the other way around like im trying to do.


Is there any way to just add xp without removing vista first.. or am I destine to be stuck with vista forever?

no i dont think that you can do this.. you definitely need to remove vista first..
Reply:yes you can do a dual boot with xp/vista, it is not stable at the moment. I have XP pro and vista 64 and ended up repartitioning my hard drives. The simple way is install xp on a newly created partition of a blank machine give it 50 gb then switch to vista and do the same. Currently if vista sees the xp partition and certain file versions it tries to load some of them with disastrous consequences.


You can do it the other way around but you need to have blank space which you can turn into a partition dedicated for xp. also if you are going to run programs you will have to install them separatly on different partitions.

RightTriangle function for C++?

The book I am consulting is Gary Bronson, C++ for Engineers and Scientists, Second Edition, Course Technology, 2006, ISBN 0-534-99380-X





I’m using Microsoft Visual Studios 2005 .


So here is what I’m attempting to do:


1. Write a function rightTriangle that accepts two double arguments (the two sides of a right triangle a, and b) and returns one double value (the length of the hypotenuse). The function prototype should be defined in file student.h and the function itself should be written in file student.cpp.


2. Write a program in Main.cpp that reads the two sides from a file, uses the function rightTriangle to calculate the hypotenuse length, and writes all three values to an output file.


3. Execute the program using the following triangle side input.

The problem is that I cannot get the function to strip values from my inFile. It says that inFile is an undeclared indentifier in my function

This sounds like some sort of compilation error,but it would be on the machine where the code was compiled (ie:at the Yahoo end) so I can't understand why you are getting the error.


I would suggest that you do a general clean up by deleting temporary files,cleaning internet history,run adware and spyware scans etc and because you need visual basic runtime files to run this sort of application search Microsoft site for a service pack for visual basic 6.(I think the file would be called vbrun60sp6.exe or similar) this will ensure that you have the latest runtime files for applications that use visual basic.

How can I fix an ASSERTION FAILURE that occurs while using Mozilla Firefox?
It means there's a bug in Symantec Antivirus or Norton Internet Security.





Either that, or it is not co-operating with Firefox.


If you have other anti-viruses, just leave one - they often conflict with each other.





Run Symantec Live-Update, reboot and if it doesn't help, disable all add-ons in Firefox, then bring them on one-by-one to see which one causes the problem.





Let me know if it helped - I'm very curious about what's causing the trouble.

I have no idea why, and I run regulary AVG %26amp; Spybot scans i.e twice a week, and I am totally confused by this message. After i have clicked ignore (because retry doesn't do anything) that message comes up where you have to "send error report" and firefox has to close. HELP ME PLEASE!





P.S I don't have the programme "microsoft visual studio 8" on my computer!

I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Firefox and see if you still have the same problem.

Do I have to include .net framework in a setup file in c#?

hello all:


I developed a windows application using c#, and then created the setup file for the application, whennever i install it on a target machine that doesn't have visualstudio installed on it, it asks for a .net framework download before completing the installation, I'm using visual studio.net 2005, and i read that it includes the .net framewrok by default and we don't have to add it.. does anybody knows what's the problem??

Just a guess, but sounds to me like you're not putting this into the setup.cfg file parameters to look for and install Net.frame work on the target machine if it doesn't already have it installed.

Very simple C++ help?
Linker tells you, that the code in your function "WndProc" tries to call function "About", but you do not have any function with that name. Looks like you created your project as "Windows Application" (while it should be "Console application") and didn't manage to remove all the unneeded generated code.





The easiest way to solve your problem is to start all over:


* Select from the main menu: File-%26gt;New-%26gt;Project


* In "New project" dialog select "Visual C++" to the left and "Win32 Project" to the right. Name your project and press "Ok".


* In "Win32 Application Wizard" window select "Application Settings", then set application type as "Console application". Now press "Finish" - the project will be created.


* Now type your code and compile. Good luck!

stdio.h is referenced in iostream.h but as a general rule include it anyway
Reply:When the linker gives you errors, it means that it cannot find the .lib files that it needs to link your program.


However, in this case, it looks like you might have told VS to build a Windows32 program, instead of a console program. I don't have VS, but I have Visual C++ 2005 Express and the project setup should be similar. When you create a project, specify a 'Win32 Console Program.'


Also, I think you're not supposed to put the '.h' file extension after the name of the header file that you wish to #include in Microsoft Visual C++. (Look in the compiler's help file for 'Standard C++ Library Overview.'


Remember to insert this line after your '#include' lines:

How to make a c# dll that cannot be referenced by other project?
The short answer is you cannot, but you can make it difficult.





Read on for the long answer if you care.





What it sounds like you want to do is use some sort of a DRM solution. The basic concept behind DRM is that you have your files encrypted, and only give the decryption keys to programs that are trusted not to do things you don't want them to.





In this case because it is an actual program or part of a program then you need to have windows do the decryption, or decrypt it yourself just before windows uses it, but that leaves a lot of other security holes. The problem is that Windows does not support this type of thing natively, so you have to write, or buy, extensions to Windows that will.





But, Windows also supports debugging tools and hibernate which can give someone else access to your unencrypted dll in RAM so you have to patch windows to some how keep other people from seeing the dll through these interfaces. But even then someone can load up your program and through some hardware hacks read the RAM out of your computer on another computer that is not trying to protect it. Or run windows in a simulation of a computer and just pull the unencrypted data out of where ever windows decided to put it.





If what you are trying to hide is valuable then just give up now. Sony, Microsoft, Apple and many many others have all tried this sort of thing and all of them have been cracked, because you cannot keep something secret if you do not control the hardware it is running on. What is more trying to keep people out may just tell those very people that something here is valuable and make them want to get in.





What you can do, and this will keep out most of the people is first don't use a dll. Why split the program up into two if you don't have to, especially if you don't want anyone but your program using your dll. Second strip out all unnecessary debug info. Most script kiddies will not go looking inside a single program and even if they do with no debug info most will give up fairly quickly, but not all. And stripping a program is common enough everywhere that real hackers will not think twice about it.





You also could try and use an obfuscater to make your program more confusing and jumbled, but again that is likely to just draw attention and make people try and hack in.





If you do find a way to truly protect the data on an untrusted computer then patent it quick. You will make some very serious money selling it to every Music, Movie, and Game company out there.

Whenever a c++ program that I make ends, no matter whether it is by using "return" or "exit(0)", it always displays, "Press any key to continue" before the window closes itself. Is there a way to get rid of this message and have the window close itself without having to press a key?

C# was developed to encourage Java and C++ programmers to migrate to .NET. On the other hand most VB.NET programmers used to be VB 6.0 developers.





VB.NET is easier to understand and learn and VB.NET programmers usually have a hard time working with C#. The converse is not true. C# programmers usually manage to work with VB.NET code.





I suggest you learn C# not because it is superior, but because it is more widespread. Learning C# means you will still be able to write VB.NET without difficulties.





PS: There is a myth that states that C# is faster than VB.NET but this is not true. To be more exact, we can say that VB.NET allows you to take actions that might degrade your application performance. Such actions might not be possible to take with C#.

Hello, I am from the old-school C/C++ generation and have seen the C#.net arrive quite fast. Now it seems like everyone wants a C#.net developper. How did you learn this? Any good resource links? I havent read any book for learning C#. The language specification and gotdotnet should get you upto speed.
Reply:Basically, changing from C/C++ to .net is easy. Because newer versions usually means easier to use. Besides, the .net help files (MSDN) is a great source of knowledge, tips, and samples.





So don't worry. I suggest you keep a reference book with you all the time, and go right into developing your application. When you face a problem which you don't know how to solve, search first in the .net MSDN, then either in the book or in the net for solution only for that one problem.





Just remember, BE VERY FOCUS. Take one problem at a time. Very soon, in a month or two, you will get used to it. Good luck.
Reply:Just one thing that I find important: C# is _not_ a new version of C or C++ as someone here stated. It is a language of its own, that's very familiar in syntax to C and C++ users.


Microsoft also has C++.NET which basically consists of .NET Framework extensions for C++.


And you can see yet another point here: if you're proficient with C++ there is no need for you to move to C#. The C++ syntax for .NET references and scope notation is somehow funny but easy to understand.

We don't see the code so we can't help at this point; but seg fault usually is memory leak in more specific name; but anyway, UNIX systems have more strict checks, so development in Windows usually won't give you bugs until codes actually hit a UNIX system.





Usually you should code all the way on a UNIX, not done half way in Windows and move to UNIX, because bugs are harder to track from square one.

Created a Windows Service app, but it won't show in the Services listing?

I am creating a Windows Service in Visual Studio 2003, C#, .NET version 1.1. The application compiles OK, but when I try to install it on my Windows XP PC to test it, the new service does not display in the listing of available services (Admin Tools%26gt; Services).





I have tried refreshing the list and rebooting my PC. I have installed the service with both the Installutil command and by creating a setup project. Both install approaches ran fine, gave no errors, and said the service was installed. It even shows up under the Add and Remove Programs listing... just not in the Services listing.





Anybody encountered this before and know how to fix it?

does anyone know where i can find a decent tutorial on how to use enumchildwindows? Don't say try googling, I've been doing that for an hour :( I'm using Visual Studio .NET, c#. Reply:I like NetBeans the best because it has the most documentation, and it will do textbook code. JBuilder will utilize proprietary classes outside of traditional java to make the project work. NetBeans also lets you add a plug-in for C++. Microsoft and Sun had a disagreement so I don't think VisualStudio will ever accomplish java.





In the Open Source community is the mono project. mono is a wrapper for .net and it is still under development.





There is one other solution, QT from Trolltech. They offer a student version of their product that is free to use. Should you write commercial code, then Trolltech wants a license fee. QT is cross-platform C++. VisualStudio is Windows only.





Really, the Linux platform is the powertool for what you are seeking to be all-in-one.

I need to bring myself up to speed on VB in a 3-10 week period. I have been coding at intervals for 20 years and have coded in COBOL and C but more recently in PHP but havent written any code in 3 years (ended up on the business side).





I have an application I wish to write to hopefully kick off a small software company of my own and wish to do this in VB.

.Net is a bit of a pig, the 2003 version is not as good as 2005 but I still prefer to use VB6 and utilize the API declarations.

MFC is a C++ class library which encapsulates the Windows API. ATL is the advanced template library, it contains stuff for COM programming and GUI programming (i think).





If you want to write native Windows applications, you find a lot of articles on codeguru.com. Also, there's a book by Microsoft Press, written by Charles Petzold, which is a kind of a reference.





The Windows API is a C API. So either you use C functions in C++, or you have to use a C++ wrapper like MFC or WxWidgets or QT.
Reply:MFC was sort of the pre-cursor to .Net. It's not quite as useful to .Net, but if you use that API you get a more organized object oriented layer on top of the Windows API. MFC is standard with Windows, so if you target that API you won't have any dependencies that Windows users won't already have installed.





ATL is just the abstract template library, it's also pretty standard and all Windows installations should have it.

I've had experience in Visual Basic 6 and HTML but I've recently had some ideas about making a program with some basic A.I. (i.e. talking to it and it talks back). I've heard about the various other Visual languages that Microsoft have to offer (such as Visual C#, V#, C++ ect). I have Visual Studio 6 to hand if it's any help (although with all the new versions they've released like .net and 2005, I'm not sure if 6 is a bit outdated by now). C# Where do I find a compiler?

I am learning C# and wrote my code in word pad and saved it as a cs file extention. The next step is compile the code from a comand line. Where do I find a compiler? Is there one in Visual Studio? Is a compiler seperate from the visual studio program? My book doesn't give me specifics on the compiler it just tells me the steps on how to make the cs file into an exe file but nothing about if I am supposed to use visual studio to compile. Reply:Word pad is truly not the right editor to code. You should use a proper IDE (integrated development environment). I find SharpDevelop very useful, it's free, it's fast, it's feature-packed, but not as complex as the 'big irons'. You can compile your projects right from the IDE, no command-line needed.

I have learned c++ basics but i think i need to know what is a buffer so:

First, get rid of Kaspersky and all the other Spyware programs you have. Do a Google search on Smitfraud Fix. Run that in safe mode. While in safe mode, go to Start%26gt;Control Panel%26gt;Internet Options%26gt;and delete Cookies and Temp Files on the General tab. Reboot into normal mode. Then download AVG Free and SUPER AntSpyware from majorgeeks.com, both are free. Run Super first, reboot and then run AVG. After AVG is done run Super again. If you are still having issues at that point, reinstall your visual studio software.


How to generate list of files , classes and methods in a project?

I would like to generate the following reports in a Microsoft Visual Studio (VB) and Visual Studio .Net (C#)0 Projects.

Generate a report of list of classes, methods and description of the classes (based on comments)





How do I do that ? Is it possible to using VS.NET or any plug-in available?

How to generate list of files , classes and methods in a project?
To know what is missing, you need to know what is required - since a project can be made up of source files, source files, documentation, content, resources and references. This means reading the solution (sln) and project files (csproj) files and possibly the resx files of the project.





Also, to know that something can be found, you need to know the directories visual studio uses to resolve file locations. This is the local directory, the GAC, a directories listed in the .NET / Assemblies hive in the registry. Also, references can be to item within a solution, and thus may use the local GUID for the project.





Building this report isn't easy, and Visual Studio tells you what is missing already. If you're using Visual Studio, simply attempt to compile the solution, and see what it says.





If you want to build a report of what is IN your solution, try using nDoc. It reads your solution and output a web site of all your comments you've put into the code (C#).


What MSDN library should i install ?

I have recently installed Microsoft Visual Studio and C++ says that it`s help sistem is missing.


It says that i need the MSDN collection .


Now i`m not sure but i think that Visual Studio 2003 is the product that i have,and I want to ask you guys if the MSDN library for VS 2005 is compatible with my version ?

You should have received CDs with the MSDN files. Check if you have the CDs, and install whatever's on the CD.
Reply:MSDN is the reference you'd use while programming.. installing it is absolutely optional.. You can save the space and just use the web when you want to use the reference if you can rely on your internet connection..

Unhandled exeptions in MSDN XNA Studio Express Beta?

I have recently downloaded and installed MSDN XNA Studio Express Beta1 games development module to develop games for windows using Visual C#. Upon trying to build and run the included startup project (Spacewars1) I repeatedly get an unhandled exeption error in the penultimate statement - the reason given was %26lt;%26lt;no suitable graphics device exeption was unhandled%26gt;%26gt;.





The statement is: " this.GameComponents.Add(this.graphics);"





minus the quotation marks obviously.





Anybody else had this problem and does anybody know the fix?

Reply:Sounds like a DirectX error that occurs when your video card isn't capable of handling the graphics mode you set with your device adapter. I'd suggest enumerating the supported devices on your machine or just doing a little trail-and-error.

Borland C++ 3.1 moves very slow on Windows XP Service Pack 2. ntvdm.exe (Windows NT DOS Virtual Machine) takes the CPU to ~99%.





What should I do?

Ah, yes, I see the problem. The newest Visual Studio prefers unicode strings, which use 16 bits per character, as opposed to the classic strings which used 8. When unicode is defined, it uses MessageBoxW (W is for wide character), normally it would use MessageBoxA. The solution is to make your string literals into wide character strings by prefixing them with L:

As for the specific assignment, I've put a link to the cstring or string.h library's strtok() function documentation in sources. Y'know around the turn of the millenium, when C++ added the STL library, a split between C and C++ programming happened -- specifically in the #includes. If it is a standard C library you are supposed to indicate it by putting a c in front and dropping the .h. If Microsoft is mixing the old libraries for C and the new ones for C++, then there is one more defective product out there to hate them for. My GCC library includes this in the cstring header file:
